Nature
Through trial and error, I've discovered that by starting with a few base coats of acrylic glazes, I can create depth and complexity. The next step is to define my composition using darker acrylic colors before applying the richer oils that generate texture and build form. I prefer to use a limited palette and a dominant color to unify the composition. Very often I begin painting with one idea in mind only to wipe the first or second layer of paint off, rotate the canvas, and then produce a totally different piece using the under-painting as a basis for the final work. My initial intentions are rarely visible in the final work..
